Finasteride: Microdosing, Topical or Oral?
Many men feel apprehensive about taking finasteride because of the potential for sexual side effects.
Even though that potential is low, there is a lot of discussion and hype about it on Instagram and social media, which can create fear before someone has even spoken with a dermatologist or trichologist about what may be right for them.
Finasteride can be taken in several different ways, and the right approach can be a very personal journey.
Oral Finasteride
The general oral dose of finasteride is one milligram once daily.
However, it can also be microdosed. If you are apprehensive about taking it every day, one approach may be one milligram three times a week.
If that still feels uncomfortable, smaller stepping stones may help you gradually find a level you are comfortable with. For example, you might begin with one milligram once a week and gradually increase from there.
Topical Finasteride
Finasteride also comes in a topical form.
For someone who feels uncomfortable with taking oral finasteride, topical application may feel like a more suitable option.
Sublingual Finasteride
Another option is sublingual finasteride.
This form melts in the mouth and provides another delivery pathway for taking finasteride.
Finding the Right Approach
There are several different delivery systems and ways to take finasteride, so the approach does not have to be the same for everyone.
Many people tolerate finasteride very well. If a side effect does occur, finasteride would generally be stopped, and the side effects would normally subside within about a week.
Any concerns about finasteride, dosage or side effects should be discussed with your doctor or GP.
The important thing is not to let fear prevent you from exploring the different options available and working out which approach is right for you.
