What Tests Are Needed to Diagnose Hair Loss?
Diagnosing hair loss typically does not require extensive testing. In most cases, a specialist can determine the cause through visual examination. However, certain tests may be recommended if an underlying health issue is suspected.
1. Initial Examination
A dermatoscope may be used to closely inspect the scalp and hair follicles.
The specialist looks for signs such as:
Miniaturized hairs (a sign of androgenetic alopecia).
Exclamation mark hairs (common in alopecia areata).
Inflammation or scarring (which could indicate conditions like frontal fibrosing alopecia).
2. When Are Tests Needed?
If the diagnosis is unclear, additional tests may be required.
A scalp biopsy might be done in rare cases when conditions like scarring alopecia or unusual hair loss patterns need confirmation.
3. Blood Tests (If Necessary)
If an underlying medical condition is suspected, a doctor may order blood tests to check for:
Thyroid function (TSH, T3, T4) – To rule out thyroid disorders.
Iron levels (Ferritin, CBC) – To check for anemia.
Hormone levels (DHEA, Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone) – Especially in cases of hormonal hair loss.
Autoimmune markers – If autoimmune diseases are suspected.
4. What to Expect at Your Appointment
In most cases, you will receive a diagnosis on the same day without the need for invasive tests.
If the specialist is uncertain, additional testing (biopsy or blood work) may be recommended.
So, if you're preparing to see a hair loss specialist, you can feel reassured that rigorous testing is usually not necessary, and you’ll likely receive answers right away!
